didnt like chopped pork--like mush. Nice server who was very attentive. Ask for Mark. He'll treat you right. Just try something other than the chopped pork...

I have seen the mixed reviews on yelp. But I've been getting great word of mouth in the last week or so. I've been hearing that it was good, but nothing to write home about. Then the last week or so I've been hearing about "same ownership and new mgmt." I heard the new mgt really knows his stuff. To my amazement, the mgr is a kid named Josh. I am a "mature Southerner". I honestly can't see a twentysomething Maryland kid knowing about BBQ. BBQ is like playing the Blues. You have to have lived and suffered and done without to appreciate good BBQ. I am TRULY- a BBQ snob!!! Quite frankly, I was scared. But I was able to keep my mind open, due to the warm inviting atmosphere and the WONDERFUL SMELLS!!! I looked around and it was an establishment that Bar Rescue's Jon Taffer would be proud of. This kid may be on to something! But then the real test came. Asking for recommendations. He suggested the Brisket/Shoulder plate. I shied a little when he mentioned brisket. I am a pork purist from NC. Then he showed me the variety of homemade sauces and let me taste test. That was all the convincing I needed. They brought my food on a tray. I liked that because I HATE being inundated with bread and fillers (cornbread doesn't count- it's neccesary). a HUGE pile of the most succulent juicy flavorful naturally smoked pulled pork. Then there were several slices of the most TENDER brisket I've ever eaten! The sides were outstanding! I had potato salad and greens. The greens tasted like they came straight from a private Soul Kitchen. I also had a local brew. Flying Dog's Winter Seasonal. Perfect compliment. Service was IMPECCABLE. Kichen, dining, and bath were IMMACULATE! I don't know where this kid got his "soul" for BBQ, but it was like "going home" for this weary North Carolinian. Siskel/Ebert AND Mason/Dixon gives Josh and The Black Hog Urbana two thumbs up!!!
