This is one of the best food and service restaurants in Frederick.
Love their delicious food, relaxing atmosphere, friendly service and moderate prices. I go there pretty regularly.

I don't know who would not give them top marks. They are definitely one of the best restaurants in town!

ONE STAR?? I dont get it. This place is GREAT!. The food is excellent, the prices are reasonable, the service is great and freindly, the place is clean and well kept. I routinely drive past at least twenty places to eat to come here. If you want good Mexican cuisine, try it. You'll like it.

This is one of my favorite Mexican Resteraunts in Frederick. I am originally from Texas and we love our tex-mex food. This is a wonderful place to take your kids or to even take a date. I love it.

The chips and Queso are the best. We always have a good meal there. My husband had Shrimp stuffed with crab meat and it was great!

I love Mexicalli Cantina. Their chicken burritos and fish dishes are wonderful and well presented. Also, check out their sangria, flan, and good coffee. Good eats for a good price!

I enjoy this place. Good food and good service. Great for large groups...there's never a wait and you don't even need reservations. Would recommend!
  • From: Great or cheap, either 1

Neither great nor cheap. Good food, but you pay for it. Dinners are about $5 more here than other "good" local Mexican restaurants. Has been surpassed in the last 4 years.

This is the best Mexican restaurant in Frederick. The food is great, never been disappointed. We have also had parties there, where they did a great job handling such a large group. I have been to Mexico and find that the food is just as good at Mexicali. As for the service, you may have a waiter that is in the weeds, but if you ask another waiter for something they are usually happy to help you out. A much better choice than La Paz!

I love this place and eat there often! The portions are great and the service exceptional. If you have never been check them out. This is the best Mexican food in Frederick.

We've tried several of the local Mexican restaurants in Frederick, and this one is the best so far. The salsa and chips are superb, and the entrees are excellent. Go on Wednesdays for the Singing Cowboys.

I've lived in Texas and Southern California and was very disappointed with the "Mexican" food in DC and Maryland until I found this place. It is very good food and our only choice when we crave Mexican around here. La Paz has a nice outdoor dining area but there is no food-related reason to go there as far as we are concerned.

Coming from Oklahoma City, I was disappointed in the Mexican Restaurants I have tried from Monasses, Reston, Bethesda, Rockville and other areas. Finding Mexicali was a lifesaver. We love the duck, the stuffed lobster, and the fajitas. Their Tex/Mex is so so but their frozen margaritas are great!

Of all the mexican resturants I have been to in Maryland this is by far the best I have had. I miss the hole-in-the-wall type resturants we had in Texas. However, this one will certainly fit the bill.

Try the ceviche. It is on the appetizer menu, but is frequently what I will have there for my meal.

Overall, the food good, the tequilla selection not large but some nice touches, the service friendly, and the prices typical. It is not one of the wonderful whole in the wall type places you find in areas of the country with large Mexican populations. But it is pretty good. With Mexicali Cantina open, one of the great mysteries of the universe to me is how there is anyone inside of La paz.

If you are a vegetarian, skip this place unless you like your beans out of a can. Rice was just a bad. I suppose if you cover it up with meat, it's will pass as a useful bed of something. Better choices are to be found in Frederick. By Far!

Was relieved to find this place after moving here from Houston, Texas. So far its the only good Mexican restraunt I've found in the DC area. Tried La Paz as well as many many others, (frankly not sure how they get away with calling La Paz Mexican food.. )

Best in Frederick I've found so far for sure, the beef is wonderful, Queso is great, this place knows how to make good Mexican food. Highly Recommended.

This is my favorite restaurant. Unlimited chips & salsa (the salsa is to die for). & I love the enchiladas. I have been going here for quite a while & the service is so friendly they always remember me and most of them even remember my usual order! Sometimes the service can be slow but that is just because it gets so busy because it's amazing!

the prices are reasonable, the atmosphere is great, and the food is always subperb. . . it is one of if not THE greatest mexican restaurant that I have ever been to, I reccomend it to everyone out there who is stuck munching out on Taco Bell

The food is good. The ceviche, an appetizer, is far and away my favorite meal there. It is good sized, and has a nice variety of seafood. Margaritas are tasty, and they have Petron for those who like a shot of tequilla. How La Paz is still in business when Mexicali Cantina is around is one of the world's great mysteries.

This is the absolute best Mexican food that I've ever had. We eat here atleast once a month, and have never been unhappy with the food or the service. The cheeps and salsa are great.
  • From: Becky

High quality mexican food. Don't expect ground beef in your tacos or salad or burritos, etc... more like strip steak. In the fajitas, you find yourself wishing for more vegetables because it is loaded with meat. The seafood burrito has good sized shrimp and scallops in it. We'be gone there for years, and after trying La Paz (can't express how bad that was)just a month ago, we know for sure Mexicali is the best in town. Exceptional food. Sometimes slow service, but not always. Great margaritas.

This is the best Mexican I've found in Frederick -- good enough to keep me from going to Montgomery County unless we're meeting friends or family there. Service is friendly although sometimes slow. Some interesting variety on the menu as well as an inviting atmosphere (although the plaza has seen better days) makes for a winning place overall.

Family friendly (especially for little kids,) the food is good (not great) but, the atomosphere needs work (two of the same picture next to each other.) The service has always been good and my wife likes the salsa much better than La Paz (which she can't stand.) We have been going to this place since it opened and think probably the best all-around mexican restaurant in the Frederick area.

I really enjoy the food at Mexicalli Cantina. The restaurant has a nice atmosphere and service is friendly and prompt. I've enjoyed their steak fajitas, as well as their baked chicken with onions and black beans and rice. The margaritas are great too. The food here is MUCH better than La Paz, which I can't understand how they win best Mexican food each year. I dined there twice and came out disappointed. Mexicalli is the best Mexican restaurant in Frederick!

My husband and I love this resturant. We've never had any problems with it.(We've been going for over two years) Over time it has improved tremendously with the atmosphere. It has gone from good to much better. Service is ok, like any place it just depends on the waitress or waiter that you get. We have had no mess ups on our food. Very tasty. Definately reccomend this place for Mexican Food! At least give it a try.

Comments on this restaurant? Pretty good as an overall experience. We've been several times and have never been disappointed with the food. The mussels mexicali are wonderful, and even the fish tacos are good. However, the service is hit or miss (usually, miss), including not getting drink refills or being billed for drinks that never found their way to our table. Fortunately, the server is usually very good about fixing the bill. Go for the food, not the service, and you won't be disappointed. I have heard that while the dinners are great, lunch is terrible. I've never been for lunch.

This was by far the worst mexican restaurant we have ever had the dis-pleasure of eating at. The food tasted as if it had been prepared in a microwave. Our daughters hamburger tasted like sour, and the texture was like rubber. We would never eat there or recommend this restaurant to anyone of our friends or enimies.
  • From: Guacamole Lover
    Date: July 2, 2004

They have great guacamole and their other dishes are tasty, too. However, we stopped going there a few months ago when, combined with poor service, our guacamole was served to us with a HUGE SHARD OF GLASS in it! Thank God we didn't get hurt. The straw that broke the camel's back was when the bill was presented -- with the guacamole on it! Needless to say, our meal was on the house, but we will NEVER go back.

Great finally I don't have to fly to Mexico. The fresh made picata sauce prior to the meal was excellent, ribs fall from the bone, the fresh made burrito's compare to none in Frederick County. My First ***** rating congrats.

Great Mexican food. Highly recommend the quail.

But, imagine my surprise when I found, accidentally, that my tip amount on my credit card bill had been altered upward by about 33%. They use those receipts that are not copies of amounts that you enter, i.e., tips. Too bad.

Wonderful restaurant with exceptional food. Every dish on the menu is wonderful and they boast the tastiest beef. You'll love their salsa before your meal.
