Plain tex-mex that has less flavor than Taco Bell (seriously). Margaritas are NOT fresh (I sat at the bar and watched them pour the mix out of a bottle). Long waits for a table. At least they have nice outdoor seating and a prime location.

I've tried them a few times hoping this wasn't standard operating procedure, but the result was always the same. Even the salsa is dull.

From: Anonymous

The patio and location are very nice, but that's about it. The food is mediocre, and the margaritas and sangria are the worst I've had anywhere. Suggest the far superior Cacique just down the street.

From: Janis

Why is this place so popular??? The only thing we liked was the ambience - sitting outside and sipping on a margarita was pleasant. Sadly, the food was not.

Better visit Cacique, Casa Rico or Mexicali Cantina if you actually want to eat!

From: Mike

La Paz is one of the best places to eat in frederick. Anyone who says otherwise either does'nt know good food or they are complete idoits.

From: Anonymous

people got to la paz for the atmosphere, not the food. It's a local gathering place, great for socializing. Food tastes like its microwaved, and if you've ever enjoyed a real margarita, you will know that's NOT what you are getting at LaPaz.

From: Anonymous

Its inexpensive but I don't think good enough to warrant an annoying trip to downtown.

The salsa is like tomato sauce.

The queso is pretty good.

From: Wendi of Frederick

I think La Paz is awesome! All these negative comments are wasting space on this sight...most of it was based on Mexican or Spanish food, (their comparisons, that is). La Paz is perfect, old and new, the new is great, wonderful colors, noisy and cozy, perfect mix of patrons, the smells coming from the kitchen, the margarita's! There will always be a wait on busy nights, the food is coming out fast and hot! The place empties and fills like a good restaurant should.

Recommend you go to LaPaz!

From: Eric Tinsley

Yes, La Paz is Tex Mex and should not be compared to Latino food. However, it should not even be compared to REAL Tex Mex since it doesn't even come close. I went to La Paz once and that's all it took to convince me never to return. The food is bland at best and the presentation is mediocre . I am also tired of so called patrons posting rave reviews regarding this restaurant. Why are you posting as Anonymous, if you really stand by the food don't be embarrassed to say who you really are. La Paz, is La Bland. I don't recommend this restaurant only because there are better Tex Mex restaurants in town. The only way the food would improve is if you had a few margaritas before your meal.

From: Zam

I have been a La Paz fan for years. Real good Tex-Mex at great prices. Festive, laid back atmosphere. 4 stars!

From: Niki

IMO all these bad reviews are way off the mark and come in expecting the wrong things. La Paz is Tex Mex, americanized mexican food, and for that it is delicious and extremely reasonably priced! Me and my boyfriend can have a great, filling dinner here with entrees, drinks and dessert for under 25 bucks.

The atmosphere is great and the decor in the new building is positively beautiful, overlooking the new caroll creek promenade. The outdoor seating is lovely in the summertime.

You get a huge basket of warm, freshly made tortilla chips and salsa that is just perfect - not too bland nor spicy.

The fajitas are delicious, juicy and fresh -- the chicken is especially good, all high quality, juicy grilled white meat chicken. Quesadillas are amazing with a great flavor, the flautas are delicious and crispy, not greasy or overfried. I love the mexican rice, not over cooked or overly spicy - just right.

The fried ice cream is TO DIE FOR - not the junky fried ice cream served by most mexican restaurants, rolled in cornflakes, but delicious vanilla hageen-daaz coated in a amazing cinnamon-crisp coating. I get it everytime I go.

I've been eating here since I was a little kid and its still as delicious as I remember.

From: Michelle

La Paz is not "real" mexican food there is no flavor. The salsa is Okay but that is about all. I would not recommend going there to anyone, there are many more fabulous mexican restaurants in town.

From: Anonymous

An OK place. I feel they get customers based on hype, not on quality. Margaritas are very, very poor. Food is ok, but not great.

Highly recommend Fajita Grande over them. It might not be now as a local legend (yet) like La Paz, but they the best margaritas I have ever had, and delicious food. Archie and Sam are the best!!

From: Veronica

The outside of the building is really neat, then when you walk in, your hopes dampen, and then when you taste the food, all hopes are gone and you just eat because you know you have to pay for the food anyway.

From: AB in Urbana

I have been going to La Paz for 20 years and it'a one of my favorite places anywhere....... period. Was alarmed to see negative comments about the food and how "it not real mexican food". It is real food and fresh. Not the same as the cookie cutter slop some people are used to I guess. Margaritas are the best (never any heartburn and resonably priced) and the staff is excellent.

From: Annie

We had lunch there one weekday and it was almost empty- us and three other patrons at 12 noon, that should have been a clue. We placed an order with out waitress after waiting a LONG time, then waitied awhile longer for our drinks (cokes- like that takes time) and with no other clientele practically, why the big delay? (15 min to get the cokes we ordered) Our food came in about 1/2 hour (luckily we weren't on our lunch hour..) and it tasted like mexican food that had been bought frozen and microwaved.

From: Anonymous

All I have to say is they charged extra for cheese......

That is like a chinese restaurant charging for soy sauce.

From: Pat & Jeff

We love LaPaz and go every Friday night if we are in town. We love the food, the people, the atmosphere and being treated like family. I hope to go there faithfully until the end!!!!

P.S. The margaritas are FABULOUS (hand made that is)! :} {:

From: Matt

Went to La Paz for lunch for the first time, based on a recommendation. Highly disappointed. Service was very slow, even though the waitress only had 3 tables. Had a combination platter, portions were good, but Mexican food this is not. It tasted like they had ripped off an Italian restaurant. Spaghetti sauce on my mozzarella cheese enchilada? No Mexican flavor at all. Fajitas were very bland also. Salsa is indeed pureed tomato. Not good. Would never recommend this place to anyone. For the love of all that is holy, go to Fajita Grande if you want good Mexican food.

From: Texan

Ate here becuase of all the hype from friends. I belive it's highly overated by the locals. Food was mediocre, and service even during off peak hours was very bad. Have eaten at Cacique and Mexicali Cantina. They are both much better.

From: Anonymous

The restuarant does not serve real Mexican food. The food had no flavor and the menu was limited. The food could have been anything else, but Mexican. It seemed the whole preparation process was different. The atmosphere was not traditional Mexican at all. If you want real Mexican food, don't go here.

From: Anonymous

More of a Texmex, not real Mexican food. I was very dissapointed.

From: Aaren

Margaritas and guacamole are good...that's about it. Covered all food in tomato sauce and ruined the mexican flair. Not authentic at all. Would not recommend.

From: Frank

Had the misfortune to eat there this evening, my wife said mediocre at best but I think she was being nice.

Yes bland food, the fajita were just sautéed vegetables no spices or sauce, oh yes they were warm and not sizzling; beans were dry and not very pleasing to look at. I know some like the salsa but it is not that good.

It is a great location especially to eat outside for summer, but we won't be going back it is very poor both in quality and value for money, we find Cacique a lot nicer and a better menu.

From: Anonymous

Moved to Frederick from Texas and I've lived in Mexico so maybe I'm being a little tough, but the food was rather bland. I didn't find the food authentic and it tasted like it was missing something. Margaritas were good and I enjoyed the location, but not sure if it's enough motivation for me to return.

From: Atom

La Paz has indeed gone downhill. We have been going to La Paz since 1987 and it used to be very good. A different Mexican taste to be sure, but nowadays it is just terrible. After their move to the new building, it has gotten so much worse. Brown guacamole on several visits.

Food poorly cooked and tastes bad.

The new teenager in-house servers are slow and most just don't care about getting anything correct.

Also, take out orders are not correct( beans instead of rice , chicken burrito instead of beef, food not packaged properly and the list could continue).

Bags of chips broken to little pieces.

No short term parking for picking up takeout orders since they moved to new location.

We used to go weekly, now once every 3 months, if that. And every time we swear we will never go back.

From: Elsa

Very nice vegetarian selections with fresh veggies. Very good salsa but this place has no use for cilantro for some reason. Beans are fresh and the service is usually very good. Ask for Kim's section. Very efficient wait person.

From: Lisa

Food is not great, service is poor, prices high for what you get. Margarita is good. Not really worth the trip!

From: Nayolr

La Paz is AWESOME. I've been going there since I was a little kid and its amazing! Our family goes there at least once a week. I must admit though that I liked the old place better but when resturants are extremely popular they have to expand. But I love the food and the queso dip is the best. Two tumbs up for La Paz!

From: Steve

Moved here from Houston, Texas and La Paz was probably the first "Mexican" food restraunt I tried. I will never go back. They shouldn't be able to even call that Mexican food. The salsa is gross, they have no idea what Queso is even supposed to be, and the entree's compare poorly with Taco Bell. I don't know how anyone can stand to eat at that restraunt. Me and my wife won't be going back. Oh, the service in case you where wondering was equally as bad.

Try somewhere else like the Mexicalli Cantina, MUCH better food.

From: Anonymous

The old La Paz was great if you are a local it had it's own charm about it, but the new La Paz is the new La Paz and the old La Paz will never be. They still have the same, food, drinks, etc. The new restaurant is beautiful. Yes service hasn't been perfect but they are learning with a lot of new staff. Those of you looking for "authentic" Mexican food may be disappointed but true La Paz fans come to La Paz for the food the way it is, it is what it is. I love the salsa, guacamole, margaritas, and fajitas. The wait is part of the charm because that is when you drink margaritas at the bar and socialize. I hate to get seated immediately because I enjoy my bar time. I say if you haven't been you should check it out. According to the comments you will either love it or hate it but see for yourself.

From: Jim and Carrie

Just went to La Paz this past weekend.

The wait was about an hour on a Saturday night...arrived around 7:45pm.

Waited in the bar while my wife enjoyed a Margaritta or two.....mighty tasty.

Server was very nice...but slow. Didn't get refills as quickly as I had hoped.

Queso was awesome.

Entrees were great. I'm kind of a Taco Bell guy, but I found the meal to good. I'm not a fan of the beans they served, would rather have the refried variety, but years of bad mexican has probably destroyed my palette.

Noise was excessive, but you know that going in.

We go once or twice a year and will return again.

From: Jeff Human

I have been reading the many negative comments posted about La Paz, a restaurant I have always enjoyed. On reflection, I would offer some comments. First, La Paz is not really a Mexican restauraunt. For starters, the owners don't like and don't use cilantro, perhaps the most pervasive of all Mexican food spices, and are cautious with most other spices. Think of La Paz as an improvisation on a Mexican theme. Second, La Paz is inexpensive and shouldn't be judged by the standards of fine dining establishments. Highlights: the coarse flavoable chips that are made on site. All vegetables are fresh and almost never overcooked. All the vegie dishes are great. The uncooked fresh tomato salsa is usually excellent, but can slip in the winter if the quality of available tomatoes is poor. The guacamole almost always invites comparison with the best available anywhere. Incidentally, if the salsa dosen't tase fresh, ask if there is a newer batch. Sometimes they are using up the last of yesterdays. Now for negatives. As some commentators noted, the food often seems too bland to me and the sauces sometimes taste canned, but there is a solution: order extra salsa, and blend it in whatever you get for a much fresher and spicier flavor. The beef and chicken fajitas have always been sub-par, with small chunks of overcooked meat. Go for the shrimp or veggie version. About the wait staff and the new location: there are obviously adjustment problems (I am writing this in January 2007) at the new, much larger location. The wait staff seems to have some new members who could benefit from better training and supervision. The kitchen, at times, is not nearly as fast as it used to. be.

From: Dorian

We have dined at LaPaz twice now. Once at each location. On the first visit at the old location I didn't care much for the food at all. We went recently again and somehow the food was worse. It is beyond bland. I'm from California and also have spent much time in Texas on business so I may be spoiled regarding mexican food. But this is some of the worst mexican food I have ever tasted. The service was good both times but the food is bland and the menu lacks originality as they don't serve tamales or chile rellenos which are staples at all mexican restaurats. I will never return.

From: JP

Table of 7, we all agreed the food was bland and uninspired. I ordered a cheese enchilada and a beef taco. The cheese leaked out of the enchilada and formed a pool across the plate. The actual corn tortilla was hard and crunchy and the enchilada sauce, if you can call it that, tasted like a warmed-over can of Hunt's Diced Tomatoes. The taco was soggy on one side and contained bland taco meat and a ton of shredded lettuce. It felt like they were not even trying to make good food. It's hard to understand why people were waiting for tables, because why would you want to come back to this place? I guess a sucker really is born every minute. Avoid!

From: Anonymous

This was the worst Mexican restaurant I've ever eaten at in my life, and quite possibly the worst restaurant ever. The "taco" salad was pre-shredded lettuce with pre-shredded cheese and four corn chips. The meat tasted like low-grade dog food, the salsa was anemic at best, and the shrimp in the fajitas tasted like a freezer. Garbage, garbage, garbage. Please go elsewhere.

From: Anonymous

OK, for real, La Paz has always had the same salsa. While the new location is noisy, so was the old. I love laPaz and their Con Queso is the best I have ever had, and Ive tried a lot!

From: Anonymous

Bad, bad food. Tasteless with mediocre ingredients and unappealing presentation. Slow service. Long wait for a table. Noisy. I do not understand why this place is popular. Taco Bell is more authentic and tasty compared to this.

From: Anonymous

Completely unauthentic glop- we couldn't finish our meals or our drinks, which were way too sugary. The new location is very nice, though. Go down the street if you want some great Tex-Mex....

From: the voice of reason

I don't know why this place is so popular, except that being popular doesn't necessarily have anything to do with quality food or a good dining experience. Rather you simply need to appeal to the lowest common denominator with boring, uninspired food, bland margaritas and a seemingly lively [noisy] dining room.

From: laurie

giving this place one star is generous...it is terrible...we had a party of 4 and NOBODY liked their food...service was very slow...would have gotten better food at taco bell...

From: Art B

Not the worst mexican food I have ever had, but real close. Margaritas were a let down. Place was noisey, running on reputation now, was, at one point in time a good place(old loction).

From: Anonymous

The Mexican food at La Paz is not nearly as good as other restaurants in Frederick- very bland. The location and atmosphere is very nice.

From: km

"New" location is too crowded and too noisey! They still have not figured it out. And, somehow the best margaritas (from their old location) are now the WORST. Did they go to cheaper ingredients?? No one at my table would drink theirs. The serivce was SOOO terrible we left after waiting over one hour with still no food! Do NOT go to La Paz in Frederick.

From: Christine

My husband and I ate at the old location once adn found it extremely noisy. The food was not good enough to compensate for the atmosphere so we didn't go back. We decided to try it again at the new location and found that the noise and the food were much worse. The salsa was ok, but the guacamole was horrible and bland. I barely touched my meal as it had no flavor. My husband fared a bit better with fajitas but we both agreed - NEVER AGAIN!

From: The Willards

We LOVE La Paz!! We loved the old site and we love the new one even better! The atmosphere, location, food, drinks, prices, the staff - we find everything to be subperb every time we are there! La Paz is part of Frederick's history and we hope there will be here forever!

From: dks

Had lunch at La Paz today and it was a big disappointment. My entree was barely warm - even the cheese was not melted - and the refried beans were gloppy and appeared to have been scraped onto the plate. The salsa was watery and bland. There is no effort to make the food look enticing - it's just food on a plate. The noise level is far too loud (really bad accoustics) and the dining room we were in was only half full. Can't even imagine what it's like when they host live music! The service was definitely lacking; we were drinking only water and never got refills.

From: Anonymous

My husband and I went to La Paz based on a recommendation. The atmosphere was terrific. However, the food fell well below our expectations. The salsa consisted of shredded tomatoes (we thought they had used a ricer to puree them) and mixed with pickled jalapeños. Although the salsa was not good, we decided to stick around and try the entrees. Unfortunately, after we waited for what seemed like a very long time, the entrees disappointed us even more. My dish consisted of what looked like canned stewed tomatoes mixed with chicken and wrapped up in a oil soaked corn tortilla. My husband's dish was no better.

So, if you are looking for any type of food that comes close to Mexican or even Tex-Mex, I would recommend another establishment. However, the patio was nice and the margaritas and sangria were tolerable.

From: nancy

Absolutely horrible....poor service, bad food. Don't waste your time and money.

From: T & L Willard

We absolutely LOVE LaPaz! Have been going there for almost 20 years & have enjoyed seeing them move to a new location. The Mexican Boat & the Beef Tostado are out of this world! The owners and staff are like family! Love the atmosphere & the decor. Wonderful place to relax after work, have Saturday lunch or Sunday dinner! We will continue going there until they close the doors - which we hope is NEVER!!

From: Ryan

The best margaritas and mexican food in the state of maryland

From: Jo

Sorry we chose LaPaz for our monthly dinner out with out friends. Friday - you expect a crowd. You also expect enough servers and hot food. Not worth a trip back. What happened to the quality of the old LaPaz???

And what is this shredded salsa?

From: anonymous

Give em a break for god's sake! I was in the other nite and overheard a couple's convorsation about how this isn't like the old spot and the old spot this and the old spot that. Well if you havnt noticed this is the new spot and any one who is a loyal la paz patron should be supportive to the transition that the resturaunt is making. there is gonna be kinks here and there because this is pretty much like opening a new resturaunt from sctatch. I love la paz and will be a regular untill i'm old and grey!!!

From: Anonymous

La Paz is my favorite restaurant in Frederick. Great food, fun atmosphere, fantastic margaritas.

From: Delighted Customer

I have been going to LaPaz since I was a child, and have only come to love it more at the new location. The restuarant itself is beautiful, with a fabulous patio for outside dining. The food is always good, no complaints here. Now that I am old enough to order a margarita, I have to say they are the best around. When I go out to dinner, I am in no rush. I like to enjoy the atmosphere and my friends, so I'll wait a few extra minutes to get my food! I LOVE LA PAZ. I highly reccommend it to everyone!

From: Anonymous

La Paz is a fantastic place for a casual meeting for drinks and/or dinner. Great atmosphere great staff and always great food. Some of my favorites are the salsa, the con queso, la paz salad, and always my favorite are the flautas and the shrimp la paz.

From: Anonymous

We visted La Paz on a Saturday evening. It was crowded. We had to wait an hour to be seated.

The food was just ok....I was surprised to hear that you had to pay 6.00 extra for combination fajitas. I got the steak fajitas and I could count the pieces of steak.......5...disppointing. Service was slow and the waitress ever sat down while she was taking our order. Our dinning partners backed up right to another table. Very crowded inside as well, table to close together. Prices were ok, but were mediocre for what you got. Will not visit there again....Mexicalli Cantina is much much better.

From: ilovegoodfood

The food here is VERY AVERAGE. The margaritas are VERY AVERAGE. The prices are VERY AVERAGE. The service is excruciatingly slow - this coming from someone who believes the less I see a server, the better they are doing. We had a drink and a lunch entree, and we were at this place TWO HOURS!!!

The only positive thing I can say about this place is that the location is great, right on the redone Carroll Creek. on Market Street.

Save your money and go up Market Street to find better mexican.

From: Wiggy

La Paz has always offered a unique style of mexican food. I've read through many comments on this page that make reference to La Paz not serving "Real" mexican food. Apparently, these people have never been west of the Mississippi. I grew up in Fredrick and dined at La Paz for years. I now live in Arizona where the wanabe mexican food is everywhere. I've eaten at resturants in Arizona and in Mexico and I still have no idea what "Real" mexican food is; however, La Paz is "Good" food - period!

From: Dennis

This is the worst mexican restaurant I've been to and I've been to over hundred throughout the county. This is more of a Italian restaurant with a mexican name. The enchildadas sauce was a tomato sauce, the beans were cold and the service was slow. I was in a party of five and no one enjoyed their meal. If you are looking for a good mexican restaurant, then you want to bypass this one.

From: Missterrys

We have been going to LaPaz since just after it opened in the old location. We loved it! We went to the new location with great excitement. After numerous more attempts in the hopes it would improve, we sadly will not return. EVERY time we went the service was dreadful. We waited at least, repeat, at least one hour for our food with no apologies or warning that it would take a long time. The waiter was frenzied and suffering under the strain of a disorganized restaurant. My food had been nuked and was cold in the middle, Hades on the outside and swilling in oil. The other dishes were bland and uninspiring compared to the what they had been at the old location. I am so desperately disappointed.

From: T & L Willard

We have been steady customers of La Paz for at least 15 years, both before & after the move. We have been to the new location numerous times and have been completely satisfied every time. The staff is outstanding and the food excellent. Lunch & Dinner times are very very busy, so better to plan to arrive right at 11:00 a.m. or at an off-time such as 3:00 p.m. We love LaPaz and will continue to be loyal patrons.

From: Tom

Bland food, slow service, middle of the road drinks. I can't imagine why this place is always packed. A disappointing experience. At least the location is nice.

From: Anonymous

The atmosphere is one of family. Tables are close together. A great way to meet new people! The service is always great! Familar smiling faces always. Menu prices are more than resonable and portions are unbelievable! The new building is fantastic and always packed. We frequent at least twice a week. I think that it is important to remember that the new building is over twice the size. It is a new start for La Paz. As far as food taking to long - I personally have not had that experience. However when we go out I lke to enjoy myself and take my time. I do love that every dish is prepared on request. I'll wait a few wxtra minutes to enjoy fresh food. Maybe have a margarita while I wait?! I encourage everyone to give it a try. It offers an atmosphere unlike any other. We will probably see you there!!

From: Hawknoah

Frederick institution (now in a new location) operated by an Irish family. Not the best in the city, but the food is inoffensive and fine if you're downtown and in the mood for Mexican.

From: Deb C.

We've been twice to the new location and are very disappointed. The food is slow - 45 minutes to get our appetizer! (with no apology) The servers are mediocre. And it is very, very noisy. I could hardly hear my husband over the din - and it's not even music, just poor accoustics. My daughter is coming into town and has asked to go there, and we will, but probably not go back. It's very sad that a good restaurant turned into a bad one. By the way, I just called to make a reservation (it's 2:30 pm on a Thursday) and the staff asked me to shout because they couldn't hear me on the phone - too much noise!

From: JW

Ate at the new loaction last night for the first time. It was crowded, VERY NOISEY, slow service, and the food was of poor quality, and cold when we finally got it. One member of our party took two mouthfulls and did not eat the rest. The waitress never even inquired as to why he did not want a box, or why he did not eat his meal.

We were seated upstairs in view of the wait station. We observed our waitress eating off the plates of food on the cart that came up on the dumb waiter. The board of health should make a visit here.

The new building is well done, but the atmosphere, NOISE, is as bad as the old location. WE will never be back.

From: Marcia

Caramba! This place is terrible! The salsa is shredded tomatoes and not much else... no garlic, no onion, hardly any chiles, and therefore no flavor. I ordered cheese enchildadas and all I got was melted cheese on my plate (no corn tortilla)! The melted cheese was topped with a tomato soup-type substance... NOT an authentic sauce for enchiladas. If you have ever eaten REAL Mexican food, don't come here or you'll be sorely disappointed.

From: JC

The food is insipid and overpriced. When I asked for a spicy salsa, they put jalapenos in the blender with their regular salsa and presented a greenish glop in a bowl. Anyone who has eaten Mexican food in other parts of the country will be sorely disappointed.

From: J & T

We were excited to eat at Lapa\'s new restuarant and were sadly disappointed. We were seated upstairs in plain view of the waitor/waitress service area which was a wreck and conveyed the stress of the waitresses as they tried to dash around serving a staggering amount of customers waiting for their food, some as long as 1.5 hours. The dish that was always a favorite was mediocre and the maguaritas which were always fabulous, tasted like water.

From: Christian

The new location on Market Street has the best view of any restaurant in Frederick and there is finally much more room inside! I can hardly wait for Spring when we can eat out on the terrace. We have been going to Lapaz for over 20 years. Friday nights are the best for us. The Margs are fantastic and the con queso is the best that I have ever had. The new menu seems better. I had the "Marcie's Choice" and it was very good.

From: Anonymous

If you are expecting "authentic" Mexican food, look elsewhere. La Paz serves La Paz's own style of Mexican, which is one I really like. When you go, watch the staff and how they interact with each other and the customers. If it is not too crowded you will realise some of the staff has been around for a long time, and some of the customers have been eating there since they opened. This borders on family at times. I often run into old friends at La Paz, which is refreshing in this day of strangers at every turn.\n

Some of the specials have been excellent, I need a burrito about twice a month. If you think the prices are high, order one of the combonation dinners and you will realise how much food they give you.

From: Darrell

La Paz is a Frederick staple! I love the place. It is just fun..sure it is loud sometimes...and yes it is crowded...but it is fun and the margaritas ROCK! I feel at home there and the prices are not too high. I hope it does not loose its charm and fun atmosphere when it opens at 51 South Market Street. Time will tell. It is THE Meixican place in Frederick!

From: Anonymous

Best margaritas around--much better than even Jimmy Buffett's Margaritaville in Key West! Salsa is fresh and delicious, chips are cooked in house so always fresh, queso is the best. Food is generally good, always fresh--the specials are the way to go (especially the crabcakes), or try the fish taco. Graham and Marcy, Amy and Lee always make one feel at home.

From: Anonymous

These people simply don't know how to cook Mexican food. It was bland to the point of boring. They demonstrated absolutely no feel for Mexican spices or Mexican cooking. The beef burito was mostly sloppy joe mix and the chicken fajita, while having fresh ingredients, was not properly seasoned or marinated. Plus, the pancakes were cold.

From: L.

The salsa at La Paz is a delight to the palate! We also find that at La Paz we are served generous portions of good, basic Mexican style food by friendly staff in pleasant surroundings. As in all Mexican restaurants in this area, there are no low carb corn chips, so we bring our own, but this is a minor thing. We drive half an hour to reach Frederick, and, to us, dining at La Paz is well worth the effort!

From: Anonymous

Very disappointing. Stewed tomatoes in a chicken quesadilla???? Without any warning? Not very appealing. Fajitas were so-so. I've had better flavor at Don Pablo's.

From: seanbee delicious

LaPaz truly has incredible food, although it is a bit more South American than Mexican. I think this throws people off who are used to crappy mexican restaurants -- and who expect the food to be prepared exactly the same way at each place. The food at LaPaz is not what you would expect from a typical mexican place you'd find in a strip mall -- this is because LaPaz is not a typical mexican place in a strip mall - it is so much better. It is DIFFERENT. The food is DIFFERENT -- someone else on this site mentioned that you will either love it or hate it -- I believe this is true. It bothers me that many people are unable to step out of their zone of familiarity and accept something new, and in this case, absolutely delicious.

The ingredients used at LaPaz are always top quality and fresh, and their guacamole and salsa are both to die for. The portions are generous - especially with their combination platters (I recommend a chicken and cheese burrito and chicken enchilada combo.) The beans and rice that come with most meals are not highly spiced, but soak up the flavor of the other foods and sauces on your plate.

Something else that I think may have put some people off is the way food is served at LaPaz -- no aesthetic frills. If you order the combo platter I mentioned above, you will get a plate FILLED to the edges with a burrito, enchilada, beans, and rice. LaPaz is not about making anything fancy, it is simply about making things taste GOOD.

I have been to other mexican restaurants in frederick and none of them measure up to LaPaz.

The Chile Con Queso is the best, but unfortunately the chips are not as good as they once were. They are too thick and are often staled. I don't know if the new owner has a new recipe or is buying them instead of making them on site, but I wish he would go back to the way they were.

LaPaz deserves its stellar reputation. The food is authentic and a taste treat for the Mexican chow-hound. Skip the "Americanized" fajita dishes, and go right to the house specialties like "Mexican Flag" or "Chicken LaPaz" -- both mouth-watering. The drinks are watered-down during Happy Hour, and don't think about going there for a romantic dinner. The place is noisy. But if you want the best, authentic Mexican food in town, this is the place.

La Paz is the BEST when it comes to Margarita on the rocks - they are great! When it comes to the food - it is more like 2 stars - it is hard to find something that is not overcooked and doesnt have a bland taste, but the fresh salsa is great. So if you go for nothing else go to grab a Margarita and after a few of them the food will taste good if you must eat!

Great service and fantastic Margaritas but the food is the pits. I have eaten Mexican food in many different cities and states and this is the worst.

I love this restaurant! I drive 40 minutes to enjoy the great food (especially the salsa!) and service. The colorful napkins are a cute touch, too.

I frequent La Paz often for lunch and a few times for happy hour. The drinks are excellent (try the white Sangria) and the food is delicious. The funny thing about this restaurant is you either "love it" or "hate it", but once you find something on the menu that you like it'll keep you coming back, even if it is just for drinks. The do have lunch special during the week and they wonderful. The prices are cheap, try going to the Outback, the Olive Garden or hell even Chipotle.

La Paz is the best Mexican place in Frederick. The staff is amazing, the food is perfect, and the staff is very nice. It is in the heart of beautiful downtown frederick and a parking deck is located right next to the restaurant. The margaritas are very good too.

Comments on this restaurant?

The food is bland. The service is OK. The seating is to close together to be able to enjoy yourself. It is OK for an occasional meal, but I am not high on it.

Good food, but a bit pricey. No lunch menu items. Good atmosphere as well.

Great atmosphere, great salsa and chile con quesa. Some of the food is bland, but once you find a dish you really like, you'll keep coming back. I usually get the chicken, bean and cheese burrito. Margaritas are the best, get the Gold.

Comments on this restaurant? All I kept hearing since we moved to Frederick is how wonderful La Paz was. We finally went and it was one of our most disappointing dining experiences. The food is fairly priced but adequate tasting at best. The tables were crowded together making it a cramped dining experience as well. If it is the best Mexican food in Frederick it is the best of the worst.

Quaint restaurant - jam-packed, so obviously very popular... Service was great, food was good - nothing really memorable, no signature dishes different than every other Mexican restaurant out there...but ingredients did seem very fresh.

Really thought La Paz had fabulous potential but could use a "creative touch" - perhaps an introduction of funky glassware, colorful dinnerware, and a spruced-up menu that isn't so generic - and then perhaps my whole experience might have been incrementally better.

Then again, judging by the long line and packed dining room - I suppose there isn't any need to change up status quo when things are obviously humming right along!

Been going here since it opened. Waitress's are the best and so is the owner, Gram.

Very good food for the price. Probably the best mexican food I've had. Friendly staff.

Can be a little difficult to locate - it's behind a parking garage. so keep your eyes pealed :-)

The best place in Frederick for Mexican Food! They also have the best Margaritas! I love La Paz! A must go, must eat and drink!

From: Chris

I think that this is the best Mexican style food offering Frederick has. I would highly recommend dinning here!!!

From: Monica

I had heard some people say this is a great restaurant and I believe it has been listed in the best of Frederick I went 2 months ago and do not plan to return there. The food was horrible and the room was packed tight with table. I ordered their beef fajitas. The meat was overcooked and had no flavor at all. The re-fried beans must have been re-fried at least 4 times and the chips were too thick (love the ones at Rio Grande); the portion of the house wine was rediculously small. The only thing I liked was the salsa.

The best Mexican restaurant I've EVER been to! The chili con queso is awesome!

We moved to Florida 5 years ago and nothing can compare to LaPaz. Really miss the salsa. If anyone knows the recipe please e-mail me the recipe. Thanks

The atmosphere is excellent, and food great. It is best to get reservations at peak times if you do not want to wait.
