I go to Mountain Gate as often as possible. We travel over tow hours to go there. I went for my birthday and as usual it was FABULOUS! Great place to stop when riding our motorcycles up through the Catoctin Mountains. We make it part of our route everytime we go up that way. Great food, home cookin' and reasonable priced! I recommend it to everyone. YUMMY!!!!

Thurmont Local

My daughter and I went in to eat dinner late on a Saturday night. We ordered off the menu as $13.95 for a Buffet Bar was way more food than either of us could eat. So we ordered a Turkey dinner which consisted of two slices of turkey, some mashed potatoes, a small ceramic cup of dressing and some gravy. My daughter ordered the Soup and Salad Bar. She got soup and didn't eat it so I was eating her soup. The waitress came over and said that I couldn't eat her soup so I told her I would pay for the soup. When we got the bill they charged us for the Turkey Dinner, the Soup and Salad bar and $1.99 for a bowl of soup. My daughter had less than a plate full of salad. At the table across from us parents were feeding a small child off their plates from the Buffet Bar but that didn't seem to be a problem. Sorry to say the lost my family as customers I will never go there and eat again.

These guys were very customer friendly. Me and my wife were on a long bicycle ride and they let us store our bikes in one of their nearby properties locked up. Also the salad bar was AMAZING!!! This has to be a must stop if anyone is ever in the Northern Frederick County area.

This is a diner that brings back memories of the way things used to be. The homemade bread pudding is to die for. The ham and mashed potatoes are great also. The portions are limitless, so going to this family restaurant after strenuous activity such as hiking is a fantastic choice. You can sit, eat, and hang out all day. If you have a big group, the staff is very accommodating.

We found this place by chance, after staying at a nearby camping resort. We were thrilled at the amazing variety and down-home country cooked food, that was always fresh, which is hard to find at a buffet. After initially going for lunch, we went back the next morning for breakfast! I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone who loves home-cooked comfort food! My favorite? The mac and cheese!!! The service was great and everyone was quite friendly. Can't wait to go back, and the gift shop has lots of unique things I have never seen anywhere else.

We too found this place by chance. Traveling home to VA Beach from PA, we decided to stop for a late lunch on a Sunday afternoon. My kids and husband are VERY picky eaters so we are always hesitant to try some places. We were quite pleased with the variety offered on the buffet. My oldest son even tried things he had never tried before (and loved them!). Even though the restraunt was very busy, there was always plenty of fresh food on the buffet. The staff was friendly and the facility was clean. We are glad we made this find and will go out of our way to eat here again.

We have the best of both worlds where I live...each site is almost equal in the distance between our home and each restaurant. Love them BOTH! We're going tomorrow with friends...can't wait.

We found this place by chance on a road trip, and have now driven up from Richmond, VA just to eat there. It's very good, home cooked food that you have a hard time finding anywhere anymore. It's not a bunch of premade slosh from Sam's club, they actually COOK it and it's delicious, like old family recipes. They also have a big selection of homemade pies, breads and desserts. It's a very good deal for the price. It also has a little gift shop. If you are on your way to Gettysburg or anywhere in the area, don't miss this place! No matter who you are, what you eat or who you have traveling with you, they will all find at least something to like here, even those with special diets (diabetics, vegetarians, heart patients, dieters, anybody! But don't stay on your diet while you're there or you'll miss out on some good food)

I have grown up in a Navy family with my dad's mom living in waynesboro. Everytime i would go visit my grandmother i would always want to go to Mountain Gate! Now at age 27 I still go when i can and share the Mountain Gate with everyone i know. The food is always hot and you cant go wrong with country cooking. I highly recommend this to anyone dining alone or with a family. Just make sure to wear pants with an elastic wasteband!

I made reservations for 15 adults, a highchair for one child and 2 infants and I asked to be as away from others as possible. We were placed in the back room, up against the wall - that was ok; but there was another table of about 16 diners right next to us, while the rest of the room was completely empty. Although there were 18 chairs at the table, there was not enough room to breath and no provisions were made for the highchair or the infants. We were told we could use another small table, but we could not push it together with the larger table, which meant that 3 people had to sit at the small table by themselves. We found a booster seat for my grandson and after searching, found highchairs, but the infant seats did not fit safely into the highchairs, so we either had car seats sitting on the tables or someone had to hold the infants while we ate. We never did get all of our place settings until after we had filled our plates and the server, though very nice, went around the table while several of us were still eating and asked if we wanted ice cream. Some said "Not at this time, I'm still eating.", but she never came back to check on those diners. The food is always good, but if I had known we were going to be separated and that provisions were not made for a toddler and two infants, we would not have gone there.

We visited the restaurant for the first time over the July 4th holiday weekend. Our family was going hiking in Cunningham Falls State Park and had heard from friends this was a great restaurant. They were not kidding! We had the breakfast buffet and the food was excellent with a great selection. Perhaps a little more "fresh" fruit would have been nice, but I hate to complain as there was a lot of variety. The sausage was very fresh tasting and reminded me of a local butcher shop style I ate as a kid. We will definitely be going back....in fact next weekend on our way down to visit our daughter and family in the DC area. The food is amazing. You won't go away hungry!

My wife and I ate the buffet lunch at the Mountain Gate Family Restaurant last Saturday on our way to see the "Sisters of Swing" (The Story of the Andrews Sisters) at the Totem Pole Playhouse. The restaurant's service and food were excellent and very reasonbly priced. All of the employees were very friendly and helpful. We will definitely recommend it to our friends and definitely eat there whenever we're in the Thurmont or Gettysburg areas.

We have been stopping at Mountain Gate Family Restaurant for 28 years, usually when traveling from Northern VA to upstate New York. My wife & I plan to have Thanksgiving dinner there this year (2009). The food is always 5 star, with more choices of every type of food than we can eat. The employees are always courteous and helpful. Food trays are rapidly refilled, and the prices are reasonable.

Recently was on a bus trip to the Lancaster area and ate at a buffet style restaurant similiar to Mountain Gate. Let me assure you that this Lancaster restaurant did not hold a candle to Mountain Gate. The food was not near as good, the servers were not near as friendly, and the price was way higher than Mountain Gate. Thanks Mountain Gate for your quality, service with a smile and prices that still allow the American family to enjoy a meal out.

We have dined frequently between the Thurmont and Waynesboro restaurants. We do not reside conveniently near either of them but when we are in the areas we always make it a point to stop in and dine. We order the buffet each time we visit. We have visited for lunch and for dinner. There is always plenty of food on the buffet and it is always warm and fresh. The salad bar is always stocked with fresh vegetables. The dessert bar always has lots of yummy treats to choose from as well. The service is impeccable and the gift shop has lots of variety to choose from if you are looking for that special gift or just shopping for yourself. We have never had a bad experience in the many times we have visited the restaurants. Prices are reasonable. We hope you enjoy!

Overall, the quality of the food is good and you can't beat the selection. Some of the hostesses display a snotty attitude if you are not wearing your Sunday best and a handful of the waitresses are more interested in serving their local clientile than serving others. the salad bar is the only disappointing food that I have found as it sometime sits too long before being stirred or replaced.

Amazing casual buffet for quality family country cooking. I've been three times on Sundays, just visited again for Easter Sunday, very busy but not bad for a weekend evening, especially good were the fried chicken, banana cake and the amazing fresh dairy items like coconut custard pie, tuna, chicken salad, potato salad and homemade coleslaw. Amazing salad bar with fresh greens and spring peas, if you want a little bit of everything, this is the place. Homemade dressings, carved slabs of meat the pork loin was delicious.

We stopped here to eat on our way home from Va. People always say they have good food there but when I was there it was not that great. Everything on the buffet looked old and gross. I opted for something off the menu and my burger was good but they gave me enough fries for 3 people. At least the burger and what I ate of the fries were good. That's why I gave it 3 stars. The buffet was not good at all according to my dad and brother.

I have never been disappointed at Mountain Gate Restaurant. My family including my aunts and uncles has eaten here also and we just keep comming back for more. The beets, green lima beans and fried chicken are the best. We have eaten at Thurmont and Waynesboro and the food is great at both places. Don't change anything except maybe opening up a Mountain Gate Restaurant closer to Martinsburg West Virginia.

I live in Washington, DC and visit a friend twice a year in Thurmont. He lives within walking distance to Mountain Gate. In the ten years I have eaten there, I have always gotten great service, good food at a fair price. You cannot beat the nice variety they provide. Some complain about the souvenir/variety store at the entrance, but these kinds of places are getting rare in this country, so appreciate a little piece of old Americana and just sit back, relax and have a few plates of decent food. I will continue to go back.

Mountain Gate catered a Benefit for my husband in October. It was the most delicious meal I've had in a long time. It was as if someone came and made it there in the hall. Everything was hot, well made and fantastic. Hats off to the cooks. 90 people were served and the comments were overwhelming with compliments. Thanks for participating.

Very crowded on weekends, although after 3PM on Sundays is a good time to go. The buffet features out-of-this-world fried chicken (crispy and juicy, but not greasy), 30 different home-baked pies, fresh bread, salad bar, carved turkey/ham/beef, and complimentary ice cream for dessert (if the 30 pies aren't enough). The service is fair, which is understandable because they are so busy.

My husband and I visited on a Sunday evening after visiting Gettysburg, PA. We had been hiking during the day as well and were very hungry when we went, so this place was a great choice. The fried chicken and pot roast were especially good as well as many of the vegetables (butterbeans, green beans, etc.). We tried to sample between the two of us just a bite or two from every pie that looked good, but there were way too many to do that! Every pie we tried was delicious. The black raspberry ice cream was wonderful as well. We would highly recommend this place.

One word....Yummy! I have been enjoying Mt. Gate since I was a little girl, and am still not bored with it! Food is great, service sometimes is a little bad. I went there with my 80 yr old grandmother (who obviously has a harder time walking), they choose to sit us in the farthest corner of the place....so thehostess could have used her brain slightly. Other than those types of things, I love it!

We have stopped here many times while traveling from Pennsylvania to Virginia on the weekends. The place is always packed but the wait is worth it. There is such a great variety of food, that even a picky eater will find something they will like. We like to try a little bit of everything and no one in our group has ever been disappointed. The dessert tables are also loaded with just about every pie and cake you can think of. Everything was delicious.

My family and I went to visit Mountain Gate and I found it to be a really cute country place with lots of unique gifts to purchase. The food was exemplary, especially the beets and fried chicken. Then after a tastey meal, they have the largest selection of desserts that are amazing. The staff has always been very friendly, polite and helpful. I look forward to my next visit. My family use to eat at Mountain Gate every Mothers Day years ago when I was a child. It was always a good experience. I had the chance to go there again with my own children several times in the last 3 years while traveling. They loved it as much as I always have. The food is delicious and there is a good variety. My children's favorite part was the dessert. Every kind imaginable. It was hard for them to pick just one. They look forward to going there now whenever we happen to "be in the neighborhood".

A nice family restaurant, but they do need better staffing. The servers try, but many are worn out and are seniors that can't take the load anymore. The food varies, but with the buffet you can try it all and I'm sure you'll find plenty to like.

We visited this restaurant on the way home from Hershey Park and found the fried chicken from the buffet to be extrememly tasty. It tastes like it was skillet-fried, rather than deep-fried. A light, crispy batter with alot of crunch. The meat was flavorful and not dry or overcooked. Since the atmosphere is casual, it is a great place to go if you have little kids. The prices are also very reasonable. We will visit this restaurant again the next time we are in the area.

We have eaten here several times, and I felt complled to write after this last time. On a holiday or a Sunday, the food is VERY good, and the buffet is well stocked, but we decided to stop on a Friday morning on the way to DC and were sorely disappointed. There was barely enough food to cover one side of the buffet, and what was there was cold. We would visit again on a weekend or a holiday, but will definitely steer clear of going here on a weekday.

We have visited the Mountain Gate twice. We live in Dunkirk, Md. but when we travel in the area of Thurmont we love to dine on the breakfast buffet. The food is always hot and what a variety. The lunch looked absolutely wonderful with those big hams and roast beef sliced on the spot. The only complaint we had was that no one informed us of the buffet prices and how the breakfast & lunch could be combined. We finally found the waitress and she answered our questions about the prices. All in all, we like it very much and would visit again.

Disappointing. That's the only word that comes to mind when I hear the name 'Mountaingate.' Their marquee dish, fried chicken, had too much batter and way too much crunch. Inside, the meat was dry from overcooking. But, I will go back because everyone deserves a second chance. I'm sure there is a reason why people line up for a hundred yards to get in there to eat on Sunday's, but it can't be the fried chicken. Try something else.

Comments on this restaurant?
We decided to celebrate Father's Day at Mountain Gate Family Restaurant.
With reservations made, we were seated immediately by the hostess. She asked us if we would care for the buffet? We chose the buffet (w/o having a menu handed to us or an explanation of the different food line cost.)
The food was delicious!
The wonderful server gave us our bill and we saw the bill was $54.00 for four people. We asked how much the buffet was out of curiosity. To our surprise, the bill read one breakfast and three breakfast/lunch charges.
When we questioned why we weren't told the difference of prices of buffets, the hostess became involved. We explained to the hostess our confusion and clearly stated the food and service was wonderful. The hostess walked away to talked to our server while rolling her eyes. We found her very unprofessional and inappropriate as a public server and even though the food and server was outstanding, we will never choose to dine there again.

Prices are quite reasonable and the fully stocked gift shop will intrigue many varied interests. Although delicious food abounds, frequent diners MAY become slightly bored by the buffet fare.
