I tried this restaurant for lunch after I saw it and purchased a coupon from restaurant.com. The service was horrific! We had to ask for a menu that took the waiter over 5 minutes to bring to the table. We ordered drinks that took even longer... After reviewing the menu, we decided to have the buffet. The food was just as horrific. We asked two different waiters for an extra napkins and never did get any. When we paid, the waiter brought back the coupon and said it was for dinner only. When I pointed out the coupon said "dine-in only" he came back to the table and said it was not valid for the buffet. After an argument about not specifying on the coupon, we paid and left...never to return again.

I had carryout for the first time from the Clay Oven. IT WAS HORRIBLE!!!! Using the online menu I ordered Butter Chicken, the menu says "white meat". When I arrived at the Clay Oven I picked up one of their carry out menus. It describes a delicious meal of Butter Chicken again using white meat. NOT a combo of white/dark meat WHITE MEAT. I drove home anticipating a nice meal of Butter Chicken (White Meat). My first taste was dark meat, the next and the next and the next piece were dark meat. In the entire dish there was only two (2) small pieces of white meat and that wasn't even equivalent to a whole breast. I think the owners of the Clay Oven think they can hide the meat under a heavy red sauce and people won't know the difference. YOUR EX-CUSTOMERS ARE NOT STUPID!! We know what we like and do not like and when you cut into a piece of chicken even in a sauce dish (Butter Chicken) you can see the color and taste a difference. It was a waste of my hard earned money to throw away a meal I did not want nor like. Never going back.

Best Indian restaurant I've tried. Staff is very gracious, premises are always clean, prices are reasonable, and, most importantly, food is exceptionally well prepared. Curries offer a cornucopia of flavors and blissfully compliment without overpowering the vegetables and meats. While they are happy to adjust the spiciness to your liking, my recommendation is to eat it the way the chef prepares it. He knows what he's doing!

Because of a special food plan, I have limited access to eat out. The Clay Oven graciously accomodates my needs and serves wonderfully delicious Indian "soul" food. The staff are always cordial and attentive. This is one of my favorite restaurants in Frederick

I eat at Clay Oven regularly, and my daughter and I love it. She's at college now, so I went to visit her last night and took her to the Indian restaurant that's supposed to be the best in Baltimore. We both agreed that it was very good, but that Clay Oven is 100 times better. I'm very thankful that a friend of mine loves Indian food, so now I have someone to go with while my daughter is in college!

I have been to this restaurant many times. The Indian food is about the best in the area. The restaurant is very small and usually quite busy. Not the cleanest place but I never experienced any problems on any of my visits. The staff is quite pleasent as well. Definitely worth a visit.

We have been eating at the Clay Oven for years. By far it is our favourite out of the many Indian restaurants we have eaten at. Very highly recommended.

I have eaten at all of the indian restaurants in frederick and this one has by far the best food. The staff and management is also outstanding and very attentive. If you want indian food instead of the americanized version this is your best local option.

We have eaten there often for many years. Food is consistently good. Service is always attentive. Good place to introduce people to East Indian cooking. We took our picky grandson with good results. Prices are very reasonable. Love the fact that they have unusual meats (lamb and goat) and vegetarian offerings. I have taken a few minutes to think of what I might say on the down side. I can't honestly think of a thing.

It takes a lot to make my jaded palate perk up but the food at the Clay Oven does that! Great cooking with excellent flavor done to the level of spice you want. Without a doubt THE best Indian restaurant in Frederick.

    Pro:

    1. Friendly management!
    2. The food was simply amazing. I had Garlic Nan and some sort of Lamb curry.

    Con:

    1. Guava juice tastes a bit different from my experience, but hey what do I know.
    2. The entire meal was close to 20 USD per person. It is a bit high in my opinion.

The best Indian food I've had in the Frederick area. Their service is superb- I came in for the first time in a few months and the waiter recognized me and my girlfriend and asked how we were doing and how we've been since our last visit. That dedication to customers is one thing I love about Clay Oven.

Their buffet is a pretty good deal except for the fact that I can only eat so much and then I'm full!

Their selection has plenty of items for vegetarians and omnivores alike. Excellent bread options. Be sure to get the appetizer sampler- it's delicious. Just don't try and finish a whole meal on top of that (but that's what lunch is for the following day).

Our first visit to the Clay Oven was also our first Indian Food. We got two different combination platters for dinner and shared between two of us so that we could sample the widest variety of food, followed up with some fabulous indian ice cream for desert, which was quite a rich treat itself. The service was exceptional and so was the food. We'll go back again soon, and bring friends and family next time.

Indian selection in Frederick is pretty poor, given the vibrant selection of other "ethnic" cuisine in the city. That said, of the three Clay Oven is the best.

I'm partial to the keema naan and the lamb korma. The latter isn't even on the menu but they happily make it for me.

Prices are pretty reasonable for a decent meal but I've seen many Indian restaurants that offer as good food for less - just not in Frederick!

The tables in the restaurant are pretty standard "American diner" fare which doesn't add to the mood, and they're a bit too small for fat people like myself. :) Dining in is uncomfortable for that reason.

Been there about 10 times over the last few years. Never disappointed. Always ate dinner, no buffet. Lamb is good, service is good, prices are good. Not too crowded. either. Pleasant.

Not bad and you do leave there feeling that you ate at an Indian restaurant as opposed to "Americanized" Indian food. The buffet is a very good value, lots of vegetarian choices and decent nan, too. There are better Indian restaurants out there but not in Frederick.

The management is very pleasant and attentive, but the food (on the buffet) is mediocre. Much better idea if you're in that neighborhood to go to Thai Rice next door, or if you want Indian food in Frederick go to the Bombay Grill on Market Street.

The Clay Oven is simply wonderful. Having had Indian food in other cities, the offerings from the Clay Oven compare favorably in terms of price and--more importantly--flavor. The naan has always been fresh and tasty, and the curries and korma are highly recommended! Also, if you enjoy extra spicy food, try the vandaloo... it's amazing!!

I was disappointed by the selection and quality of the food. The food was average at best. I have eaten much better Indian food elsewhere.

Buffet should have been placed more inside the restaurant instead of being right at the doorway where people walk in.

Decor was very modest, but the food did not make up for it.

First impression--Buffet jammed into front door area--very poor placement.

Food was OK, but not exceptional. Fresh naan instead of stale steam table bread should have been served. Lunch buffet way overpriced for quality and variety. I've had better for half as much. Other reviewers must have never lived in a big city with GOOD Indian food.

Being married to a man who is half-Indian, we are always in search of a place that serves great Indian cuisine. We have found it- we eat at Clay Oven every weekend. The food is wonderful, the place is clean that the staff is so warm that they practically feel like family! They great us by name every time we come and know what we like. Plus, the prices are reasonable.

The food is absolutely delicious and the service is very friendly, efficient, and a lot of fun! The Clay Oven is my favorite restaurant to date! Also, the meals are as authentic as you can get, not the watered down Americanized versions, and you can order according to how hot or not you want a meal to be. Bravo to The Clay Oven!

My friend and I have been there a few times and the food was great and the service was wonderful as well. We went for lunch and they have a good variaty, but they dont like to put out a TON of food since a lot of people dont come in (they want you to have fresh food). Since there was only the two of us left we wanted bread and the manager (also the owner I think) had them make us fresh bread. Little things like that count!
