I've eaten at the Tasting Room a few times but never wrote a report on it. Located in downtown Frederick, the restaurant can be quite noisy, so it's not set for a quite, romantic dinner. The restaurant is set open with a private room in the back, and a small barrier between the bar and dining area. High tops are located next to the window facing Market street, which is great for people watching.

The food is wonderful! For our anniversary we had a high-top at the window in the corner. Our waiter was very attentive throughout the evening. Anytime a guest at the bar got too close to our table, our waiter would move in between while taking care of us. He treated us to champagne for our anniversary (dessert was the other choice) and quickly got us our first round of drinks before happy hour ended (6:30pm).

The food was fabulous! We started with the country pate, which was served with a spicy mustard, pickles, and toast points. It's a dense pate and quite tasty (made with pork and pistachio nuts). Tony ordered the fennel crusted pork loin (with asparagus) and I had the salmon special, which came with lump crab meat in burre blanc sauce and spinach and risotto. Also excellent.

The last time I was there for dinner, I had the pan roasted rockfish with olive oil poached tomatoes, crab/asparagus salad, and truffle vinaigrette.

I've also enjoyed the Tasting Room at lunch, if you're on a budget, you can still enjoy the well-prepared foods for less, as the dinner prices are pretty rich, but well worth it, as the portions are ample.

Reservations are a must. So go if you are looking for fine dining with quality dishes but remember it can be quite noisy. The Tasting Room is now our choice for a special evening out.

Unreal food. Excellent, excellent, excellent. I cannot wait to return. It is pricey, however.

We have enjoyed dining at The Tasting Room for many years, but lately their wine prices by the glass and the bottle have climbed so high as to be ridiculous. I like to drink The Frank Family Chardonnay which I paid $15 a glass for. Upon checking the Frank Family website, I discovered that wine is $32.50 retail. I'm sure the Tasting room buys it wholesale and is according to my calculations making about $60 per bottle when they serve it. Their servings barely make 6 oz per glass.

I cannot believe how badly I was treated, I took my wife there for her birthday after It had been recommended by some friends that had been there a year ago for a happy hour work event.

I first called , just to make sure they were open and that they had happy hour, everything seemed fine, went in and got a seat at the table next to the bar …. Chatted with the server and the bar tender about the happy hour, ordered drinks and food and set about a pleasant afternoon.

Until after the first drink came, we never saw the server again until I had to go track him down from his conversation, the food was so so at best, kind of looked like it was something I had put together not a first class chef. Then the check came, …. Nothing on it about happy hour …. So, I asked the server, and his response, Happy hour is only available at the bar and that I have been here for 7 years and we always have that as the number one complaint. * so don’t you think they would do something about it after 7 years* …. Anyway, I then ask for the manager, I nicely tell him the story of our happy travels and he excuses himself for a minute, only to come back and tell the staff had not had any conversation with me about the Happy Hour, at that point I asked him to bring them outside and he could ask them in front of me …. He departs again briefly and returns with , “oh so sorry yes they did have the conversation, our mistake, I will fix the check” Then he sends the bartender out to apologize for the mistake ….

Do not go there if you are hungry. The food was mini-sized and way over priced.

Our family of four had dinner at The Tasting Room last evening. Great service and wonderfully presented dishes. The lamb was perfect as was the pork chop, fillet and scallops. Atmosphere was perfect as well... felt like being back in NYC!

Food here is some of the best(and most expensive)in town, but it's a small, often packed room with tiny tables. I usually can't wait to get outside and breath.

The food was excellent! Service was attentive/proper.My gf and I enjoyed the mussels to start off with, then the baked seafood macaroni and the filet which we both shared together. Couldn't have picked two better items. Next time we will go easy on the bread so we can actually finish our dinner plates! If you go for dinner, go around 6 on a weekday, not as noisy and less crouded. Great view, will return..

I'm a transplant from New York so it's pretty much the closest thing I could find to a NYC place. Apps at the bar are really good but we have yet to have dinner there.

overall: very noisy & put some alcohol in those martinis guys - you charge enough.

We love the place. We eat here often because the menu is the best around and the food always delicious. If you like Scallops they have the best I've found anywhere. Everything from great lunch menu to evening desert, from wine list to service, is excellent. World class!

I have been to the Tasting Room dozens of times. The food is always superb and the service is very attentive. And since November, 2007, there is no smoking!!! It is a little loud and the tables are close together, but that's part of the ambiance. You're paying for the food here, not the amount of space you have around you. And the food is worth every penny. The filet mignon is the best I've had anywhere.

We have dined here 3x. Very pricy but good if you get the right server and don't mind being bumped into all evening. They should cut down one less table to open up a bit more and have nicer servers. The food is great but everyone working there seems mad ast the world. Can't say it is worth all the money.

Have only been for lunch, Resturant has a nice atmosphere and the salmon cakes are wonderful, you get two small ones and wonderful mashpotatoes. The service is wonderful especially by the host/ owner, he treats you beautifully. Make an appointment!

The food was excellent! The best in Frederick. The lobster mashed potato dish is a must every time you go. Mike T has done a great job with this one. With out a doubt, some of the best dining in Frederick. If you want a romantic special occasion and want to stay away from noise try the private rooms it’s worth it. For a special treat have a desert delivered from Mike’s bakery (Proof Artisan Bakery & Barista).

A Place you have to go to !!!!!

I used to travel an hour to DC to get a meal like this. So imagine my delight to get a "big city" gourmet meal and have to drive less than half the distance. Have enjoyed the food on several occasions and each time I have not been disappointed. The swordfish was expertly prepared as was the tuna and lobster stew. I say the only disappointment was slow service and closely-set tables.

Went with my wife for our 31st(!) wedding anniversary for the first time here. We sat at a high table adjacent to the North Market Street windows. I was going to get the filet, but had the strip steak special instead. The cut was minimally seasoned, and was probably the best steak I've ever had. Just a great cut of meat... This was accompanied by the best Caesar salad I've ever had and a great martini. My wife makes the best crab cakes in the world, but she thought the ones she ordered were better than her own. Flawless service. This meal, with drinks, wasn't cheap, but was the best meal and dining experience I've ever had in Frederick, and I've lived and dined here for 53 years.

Pricey, but the food was wonderfull. The filet was melt in your mouth good. Potatos au gratin and caeser salad were also superb. Our waiter was attentive and funny-He recommended the perfect wine when I told him my likes/dislikes. I will go back when I can afford to do so-worth every penny.

I have been to TR on a number of occasions. I have had a good meal here but there is not enough consistency. I ordered the filet mignon and actually sent it back because it came out way over cooked (I ordered medium rare and it came out without any pink on the inside). The waiter got very snitty with me. In general I find it decent but not great enough to warrant their pricing. They should put as much time into their food as they do their martini bar...

The Filet Mignon is wonderful. The lobster mashed potato dish superb. The atmosphere is noisy,"cafeteria" like, and we have never had remotely good service(on at least five occasions). The wine list is very nice.Very pricey.

Incredible! The best filet you will ever have. Some people find that it's cramped and noisy but that is just part of the atmosphere and what makes it unique. Make sure you get the lobster chowder while you are there!

Food is excellent although the portions are ridiculously large. Tables are cramped.

Shame about the smokers in the bar. The smell of smoke does affect you if you're unlucky enough to get one of the tables for 2 next to the glass partition that serves only as a visual divider between the dining room and the bar.

some of the best dining around, with out a doubt in frederick but also in the entire dc metropolitan vicinity. crab cakes are outstanding, filet rivals, possibly even better than, ruth's or mortons, lobster chowder is amazing, and the martinis are great as well. i'm guessing i've been there 5 times and it's been great each and every time.

all in all, a great experience.

Despite being one of the noisiest and most expensive restaurants in downtown Frederick, the food can not be beat for miles around. Stands up well against in the best in DC, in fact. Everything I've tried is superb and world class. Stellar wine list, martinis, and desserts as well. Great choice for a *non-romantic* special occasion, as it's too noisy to be intimate, although there are rooms for private parties apparently. Although there are many fine restaurants in Frederick, this one is the best I've found.

Not sure why this is under Bistro. It needs to be under American or something similiar. Anyway, this is some of the best dining I've ever had. They really know how to cook here. They don't overcook fish (EVERYONE overcooks fish) and they pay attention to details. I love this place. It's pricey, but well worth it.
