This is the tastiest que on the East Coast without a doubt. Whenever I visit from Los Angeles, I make it a point to stop and see my good buddy, Dr. Smoke who always stuffs my gut with the best bbq there is. We don't have BBQ in CA as a rule so coming here is always a special thing for me. Man, I can smell that pulled pork and Chubby potatoes now. Yum!

I have eaten at Chubby's several times, but refuse to go back because they refuse to serve a courtesy glass of tap water. As long as I buy something else and as long as most of the people in my party purchase a soda or tea, I think it is reasonable for me to ask for and receive a courtesy glass of tap water. My friends and I won't be dining at Chubby's.

If you are looking for an experience/adventure rather than just a meal then do yourself a favor and head to Chubby's Barbecue in Emmitsburg, Maryland.
I am an American citizen who has lived and worked in Mexico the last 16 years. I came up to travel the States for a while and was referred to Chubby's. It is the best barbecue that I have ever had.
Trust me I was missing good American food and Chubby's has it in spades. Not only their meats but also the special potatoes, beans, cole slaw, corn, etc.
The chef should receive an Emmy.

Great food. Maybe I caught them at bad time. They need to kill the flies. We had to keep battin' them away while we were eating. I think they should get rid of the ripped up seats in the dining room, now that they're getting a lot of publicity.
We made a special trip because we heard about them on TV.
Very tender, meaty ribs. I prefer sauce baked into the ribs. More flavor that way, but that's just me.

We live near Chubbys and visited several times..First time food was great. Second time it was inferior, and the third time I really wondered if they kept things at appropriate temps. That, coupled with cold inside temps in the winter and so-so service (waiting for 20 minutes in an empty restaurant to give them our order) made it a no go for us finally. We LOVE the Frontier BBQ at the entrance to Carroll Valley, however.

I took friends from Minnesota to Chubby's and while the food was decent swatting away all the flies was somewhat distracting. Chubby is a nice guy, he talked with us for about 20 minutes, mainly I suppose, because we were the only one's in the place. I do like that roadside ambience and the flies actually make it somehow authentic.

My family and I ate there this evening... WOW! It looks like a dump from the outside but golly jeez they have the best pulled pork that I have ever had. It almost melts in your mouth. We ordered the bacon cheese fries as an appetizer and when they say bacon cheese fries, they mean fully loaded bacon and cheese fries. If you haven't eaten there yet... make it your plans for today.

The outside looks like a shack BUT the food is great and the people are real friendly. Real Country BBQ place and great BBQ sauce. Will have them cater my Reception

Ordered a brisket sandwich for the road shortly before closing. Out came a half pound of the leanest, tenderest, tastiest brisket I can remember having, piled onto a big roll that stood up to the meat (no roll collapse here!) and a side order of some truly excellent sauce - slightly sweey, slightly smoky, slightly tangy, great balance and went well with the meat.
Drove past this place for years not realizing what a gem it is. Now it'll be a must-stop.

Outstanding. I didn't even like barbecue until I ate here! Can't wait to return.

Good b-b-q but very pricey, especially considering it's location. Portion sizes can vary, and sometimes contain too many fatty pieces. Sides are "down-home" and a little greasy for my liking (tho my hubby LOVES them.) If you want to make a sandwich out of a platter you have to use one of your sides to get a basic roll; so instead we get rolls from the grocery store and get a real side instead. Worth a try!

I am from Texas, so I know my BBQ. Chubby's is the best in the nation in my opinion. The staff is helpful, the portions are enormous and the owner Tom is a great cook and host. I haven't tried anything on the menu that I didn't love.

Definitely worth the stop on the way to PA. Wish it weren't so far out of the way; we'd definitely eat there more. The side potatoes are great and the BBQ is some of the best you'll find.

The brisket is as good as any I've had in Texas, and I've had a LOT. Baked beans have a ton of pork in them and are fantastic. Great place. A+.

Great BBQ dive
Plastic checkered tablecloths, some picnic tables inside (we sit in a booth), sit-wherever-you-want attitude, 50's aged walls, smell of wood smoke in the air, 6 flavors of BBQ sauce on the table. There is no chemical smoke added to the food, no sterile "McDonald's" atmosphere; this is not a chain. Simply great BBQ experience. Pork and Beef Brisket seem to be the best. Chicken and ribs were less spectacular. Sides are worth the trip, usually get beans and the greens. Meals come in a reasonable size for about $11 (I get dinner and a big lunch the next day out of it), or a large which is double the meat and costs about $18 (partner eats all the meat of a large, but can't finish the sides). Been 3 times even though it is a 45 minute drive. Never too busy or loud, family and couple friendly. Highly recommended, unless you're not a BBQ-type person.

Nighthawk, you are either in direct competition with Chubby's or brain dead.
The portions are enormous, the bbq is consistently the best in the country.

We always look forward to a stop at Chubby's on our way up to PA from DC. Great stuff!

Having eaten at Chubby's several times, I have to say that they are hit or miss on the quality. I've had their ribs, brisket, pulled pork, and smoked chicken, and sometimes it's like nirvana, and at other times it's over-done and dry. The side items are always excellent, though, and the service is very friendly.

Ate here March 24th 2007, great food and service. A nice roadhouse atmosphere. The baked beans and cole slaw were extra special. Choice of 5 sauces at the table, tried all and loved most. Vinegar and mustard type was the best.

This is a truly wood smoked BBQ shack! Look piles of wood and I'm sure its not for a fireplace.
No chain restaurant, the interior is plain and simple. The ribs were okay, I wasn't a fan of the rub but others in my party really liked it. The pulled pork sandwhich was piled high and you can actually taste the smoke flavoring (no liquid smoke here). Sweet ice tea or a cold beer makes for a good stopping point when headed to Gettysburg.

On my route to visit my daughter. I always look forward to stopping in for a meal. But I have also made the trip just to eat there. Nice friendly folks, great food.

Chubby's rocks! The barbecue is the best in Maryland, and perhaps the world. The appetizers, sides, EVERYTHING is fantastic. A little known secret - they have the best cream of crab soup in the universe.
This is my absolute favorite restaurant and the only thing wrong with it is it's a 40 minute drive from my house. But I go anyway because the food is to die for.

Some of the best BBQ to be had in the mid-atlantic. Their sampler platter rivals every place I've ever been in sheer volume of GREAT food. Plan on sharing with a friend, otherwise plan on getting a "doggie box" of your leftovers and have a second meal.
A great place to stop and eat after skiing @ Liberty or Roundtop.

Chubby's is THE BEST BBQ in the area, and possibly the world. Succulent brisket, smoked for 12 hours and so flavorful it can stand naked before God, without benefit of sauce. Tender, meaty ribs and juicy pulled pork, with so many sides to choose from that a person could get dizzy trying to pick just two.
As a surprise, Chubby's also happens to have the very best crab chowder I've ever eaten in my life. It's so good you'll forget you have a meal coming and order a second bowl.
Several tasty appetizers are on the menu, including my personal favorite, the Jalapeno Caps. These are sliced jalapenos, battered and deep-fried, served with a dipping sauce.
The portions are enormous and dinners come with two sides, which are big enough to each be a meal in themselves.
Chubby's is my all-time favorite restaurant and I can't eat there enough. The only bad news is that they close at 8 because of some liquor license stuff, or some such. So go early and bring your appetite!

Best BBQ in Frederick County since Mountaindale has changed hands...miss ya Doug. Chubby's is very good though, and is a must stop for me anytime I'm in and around Thurmont/Emmittsburg, in fact it's good enough to drive up there just for a pulled pork sandwich. Next time I want to try the ribs.
