Take-out order of ribs, chicken, sausage, wings and sides from the Frederick location. THE RIBS WERE THE WORST I EVER HAD. Half were overcooked and dry, half were under cooked and rubber-like. I went back the next day to complain and they told me they were sorry.
I'm sorry I spent $128.00 on a meal that featured lousy ribs. I won't return.

My friends and I believe this is the BEST place in Frederick to get BBQ! The atmosphere is very aid back. I know you can sit and eat and I think they have a carry out type of deal as well (we always sit outside but I think I am right.. call before taking my word). Prices are not extremely high but it's definitely not a steal either. I would recommend this place!!

Most delicious BBQ I have ever tasted! And I am a food aficionado.

Hands down BEST BBQ in Maryland.

by far the best barbecue I have had in the area! An added bonus is that the service staff did an outstanding job!

After hearing some pretty good reviews my wife and I decided to try it out, and we both thought it was some of the worse bbq I had ever had. It was not authentic, and the ribs were rubbery. The bbq sauce was ok, but, nowhere near as good as the bbq from KC, Tennessee, West Virginia, and North Carolina.
If you have to have bbq you are better off at Famous Dave's, it is by far the best, but, it's the best choice in Frederick.

Great Food If You Love BBQ. Can't Say I've had anything from this spot that was Bad. Friendly Service as Well. Everytime I'm In town I feel Welcome Here.

Black Hog serves some excellent bbq, the meat is nicely smoked and very flavorful. The location is great, it's on Market Street but has its own free private parking behind the restaurant. Highly recommended!

Pretty good, but small, place on the south side of Downtown Frederick. Although the BBQ is decent, not crazy about the portion sizes for the $$. But good overall.

We had a fantastic pork barbeque and the best ever mac and cheese, for 2 people for $10. Fast, friendly service and great food. This is definately on my favorites list!

Delicious barbeque of all kinds (Carolina, Memphis, and Texas) and excellent service. If you can't get to Lexington, NC, this is the place to go.

I didn't find anything healthy on the menu for anyone counting calories. Dining area was cramped and small.

Best bbq in Frederick

Black Hog has quickly become a lunchtime favorite for my friends and I. The service is usually fast and all of the waiters are extremely friendly and courteous. The one time that my food came out sub-par (the meat was room temperature), all I had to do was mention it and I had a fresh hot plate in front of me. I am definitely hoping Black Hog is here to stay!

When you first walk in, there is not a host at the front door. You have to walk through the restaurant and hunt down someone to take your name. There is no waiting area. It was very crowded when we were there. Food is nothing to rave about. Meat was lukewarm and a little skimpy on portions. The cornbread was delicious but ridiculously small. Wanted to order Cheerwine as my drink, but they ran out and the only supplier was in North Carolina; still waiting on shipment to come in. There are much better BBQ places in Frederick County.

Wonderful food!! Great service!! WE love Black Hog!!

Went there within the first month of operation. My girlfriend is from Iowa and was extremely disappointed at everything (meat-wise). Service was awful, we were physically bumped into by three staff before we were asked if we needed seated. It took us about 10-15 minutes to get service once we were actually seated.
Pulled pork was very dry. The sides were very small (they come served in a dixi cup you'd find at a grocery store food sampling). The buns were something you'd get on a .69 hamburger at McDonald's. At least the bourbon was wet.

Very high quality extremely flavorful and well done. A little pricey should be order at counter to reduce prices a little and needs larger sides.

I'm a BBQ connoisseur, and am very much a fan of the GA Pig. Some of the best Q yet at the GA Pig, but that is Georgia and that means pork. We tried to make it there last Saturday with my friend from Alabama, and they know BBQ.....Archibald's or Dreamland. But I admit, this place, Black Hog, is very respectable. The atmosphere is decent. A little new, but the music is total blues, roof is shiny, the tables are no frills but clean. Four choices of sauce, KC, Carolina, Mustard and Black Hog (between KC and Carolina). Some tables had a tobasco sauce too, but not ours. (I'm a scotch bonnet fan anyway.) I had the (wet) ribs and brisket. The ribs were fair. I won't fluff. Others have raved about the ribs but the batch I had was just fair. I had an end cut. I'll try again but I can make better at home, or at the tailgate. The not so secret here is the brisket. Yum. Some of the best I've ever had, and I was a fan of the Mountaindale Store when it was in it's prime. The brisket I had was near perfect. Full of flavor and melt in your mouth stuff. I'll also add that the service was near perfect too. Not stuffy, and yet prompt and attentive. I haven't tried the entire menu, but I'll certainly be back. The ribs? I can make better....but I can only strive to make brisket so well. I'll be back for that alone.

I will definitely return for more meals at this establishment or to carry out. My wife and I very much enjoyed this meal so much that we did not have any leftovers to take home. Usually my wife would not be able to finish all of hers and the servings were of good size.

You get real Carolina bbq at Black Hog. The prices are good and the portions are just right. The greens as a side are delicious. Worth the wait!

Tried the place for lunch. Fresh, airy look. New furniture and all.Quite busy with the lunch crowd. Prepared for a good meal. Good service was clearly evident.
Overall impressions and results.
Plastic ware and served on paper - not the way to think moderate to high end, more like McDonalds. Maybe they need metalware, real plates and a dishwasher machine, that would help, a lot.
Bar area - could be cozy for a small group, probably is.
Meal - Sausage bar-b-q. Tasted OK, very pricy for the amount brought to the table. And it came with a slice of bread.
Chicken gumbo - made with more sausage than chicken, little if any okra, not spicy, not really southern (New Orleans style) at all.
Beans and rice - Beans, watery, rice, overcooked, little taste, need a spoon to eat them, the plastic fork leaks.
Maybe a good place to have a light lunch over sweet tea, but not rating it highly because of the plastic and overall meal presentation and taste. Overall, the "Black Hog" is more in the class of 'Famous Daves'(which is not southern real bar-b-q either), but more pricy.
I'd try it again, but I would try something else, like beef brisket. My colleague liked it,the pie too. Again, both too pricey.

Went there friday afternoon for the first time. I was pretty good. I had the ribs and greens both were a little aldente for my taste. The flavor was good but everything including the greens had a little too much crushed red pepper which made everything taste about the same after a couple bites. Will probably go back just to try some of the other menu items.

I have eaten at the Black Hog 3 times now and each time I had the Kansas City style Ribs. What can I say? I hadn't had a good plate of ribs for 10 years until the Black Hog came to town. Very tasty and moist to the point the meat almost falls off the bone. The sides could use improvement but then they are not the main attraction. Very glad to have this restaurant in downtown Frederick.
